For the past five or so years i’ve really loved eating healthy. I think it all started when my brother was getting into fitness/health in high school. He would go to the gym with his friends to lift and then come home and be like “Lilly try this workout” or he’d make his meals a certain way to make sure he was getting all of his calories and more replaced that he had burned while lifting so he could gain muscle. After high school he then went on to study Exercise Science in college so that meant i was hearing all about what he was learning and he was able to answer any questions i had about working out or eating right.
Going away to school and eating at a dining hall for three meals a day gives you a lot of freedom with what you can eat as well as how much you can eat. For me, having knowledge of how to build a healthy diet for myself prior to going off to school helped a lot. Another thing that helped me was taking a class on health and fitness during my first semester freshman year. This class went over topics like proper nutrition, mental health, as well as fitness and a few others which i think helped me start off this transition to college in the right headspace. I wanted to eat right so that i would feel good mentally and physically while adjusting to being away from home.
Here are some typical meals that I’d eat at school . . .
Breakfast – I’m not a huge breakfast person when i first wake up but if i go for a later breakfast I’ll get a bowl of fruit or some plain oatmeal with pineapple and craisins.
Lunch – i usually make a big salad with veggies, beans, and quinoa mixes that they have at the salad bar.
Dinner – My favorite dinners are when they have steamed veggies like broccoli, green beans or carrots and baked sweet potato as well as some kind of bean dish or chicken.
Some favorite things to keep in my dorm room are . . .
Popcorn – either skinny pop that’s already popped in a bag or microwaveable bags
Fruit – i usually just take a few pieces of fruit with me every time i leave the dining hall and put it in a fruit bowl in my room. Fruit like apples, oranges, pears or bananas are definitely my favorite things to snack on.
Carrots – my favorite veggie snack so I’ll either pick up a bag from the market or bring some back to my room from the dining hall.
Granola bars – i love Rx bars, nature valley, fiber one, or larabars.
Tea – I’m a BIG tea person so i like to have a few different kinds with me at school to choose from. Some favorites are: mint, ginger peach turmeric, ginger, mint green tea, lady grey, and so many more. I just love tea.
Dark chocolate – if I’m in the mood for something sweet after lunch or dinner i like to have a bit of dark chocolate.
Belvitas – i love these breakfast cookies as a sweet snack. My favorite flavors are coconut, cranberry orange, and cinnamon.
Rice cakes – i love rice cakes. Plain, caramel, chocolate, and white cheddar are all the ones I’ve tried. Plain ones are nice because you can put toppings like peanut butter or guac on them depending on what you’re in the mood for.
Peanut butter crackers – easy snack to keep in your room or your school bag.
Those were just some snacks that i try and keep in my room. I’m a big snacker so if i keep foods like fruits and veggies as well as whole grain peanut butter crackers or rice cakes, at least I’m snacking on things that i know are a better option than chips or cookies.
Of course i have days or weeks when i don’t eat as well as i usually would but that happens. It’s okay to get a little off track. If you’re in the mood for something sweet or you eat an entire pizza, don’t get mad at yourself. Just start over the next day and you’ll be right back on track.
